Punter wins £1,500 placing ‘outrageous’ £10 bet on Leicester to beat Southampton 9-0
A LUCKY punter won a tidy £1,500 after an “outrageous” £10 bet on Leicester to beat Southampton 9-0 – and promised his family a bumper Christmas.
The Foxes were 3-0 up and a man to the good at St Mary’s on Friday night after just 19 minutes.
Ryan Bertrand was sent off for a nasty challenge while Ben Chilwell, Youri Tielemans and Ayoze Perez all found the net as Southampton fans headed for the exit doors.
It was then that Paul Adlam, of Bournemouth, decided to put the money down on the 150-1 odds.
And he watched on as the goals went in, and in, and in.
Brendan Rodgers’ side led 5-0 at the break thanks to another from Perez and a Jamie Vardy finish.
Then Perez and Vardy both completed their hat-tricks in the second half, while James Maddison struck a brilliant free-kick.
The victory was the joint-biggest in Premier League history – equalling Manchester United’s battering of Ipswich Town in 1995 – and broke the record for an away win in the 131 years of England’s top flight.
But the game had Cherries fan Adlam – who no doubt enjoyed seeing Saints get battered – sitting nervously until Vardy smashed in his 94th-minute penalty with the last kick of the game to make it nine.
It is understood he was the only person in the country to back a 9-0 Leicester win.
Of course, it is not the first time the Foxes have left the bookies counting the cost after winning the Premier League in 2015/16, defying odds of 5,000-1.
Adlam, 41, is a father of two and placed the bet with BetFred, who released a statement on his behalf.
A spokesman said: “He said he likes outrageous bets and had one on France beating Argentina in the last World Cup and won £1,600.
“As Leicester got close to his predicted score he left the lounge to go and watch TV upstairs and his wife wondered what was going on with all the jumping about.
“Leicester have always been a team that bookies are wary of after their 5,000-1 Premier League winning season.
“There’s a lot of confidence around Leicester, they’re the in-form team.
“We believe no-one else in the country had Leicester to win 9-0 and he’s told us he’s going to have the best ever Christmas for him and his family.”
