MANCHESTER UNITED chief Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to make a move for Rostov midfielder Mathias Normann - having managed the midfielder at Molde.

The United boss sees his fellow Norwegian, 23, as the perfect replacement for Ander Herrera.

Big-money buys Fred and Nemanja Matic have struggled to fill the void this season, with Solskjaer keen to reunite with Normann.

Herrera left Old Trafford for Paris Saint-Germain this summer, with United looking desperately short of creativity in midfield.

And Normann appears to be a left-field option for Solskjaer, as the Norwegian's impressive season rumbles on.

Having joined Rostov in the summer, Normann has already clinched the Russian Premier League Player of the Month award for September.

He's also made his senior Norway debut, in the 2-0 win over Malta.

Man Utd have a host of transfer targets on the horizon, including Tottenham star Christian Eriksen and England ace Jadon Sancho - to go with Leicester pair James Maddison and Ben Chilwell.

Old Trafford chiefs are thought to be hoarding all of their funds for a summer splurge on the Borussia Dortmund youngster, in a deal costing around £150million.

With that in mind, Solskjaer may be forced to look for a cut-price additions this January.

And the United boss worked with Normann while the midfielder was on loan from Brighton in the 2017-18 season.

Normann failed to register a single appearance during his two years at the Seagulls - but could now become a key cog in the Man Utd machine.

As well as a potential move for Normann, Solskjaer is thought to be close to securing the free signing of Juventus outcast Mario Mandzukic this winter.
