Chelsea stunned by development of loan star Conor Gallagher at Charlton after sending Makelele to check up on midfielder

CHELSEA have reportedly been left stunned by Conor Gallagher’s amazing form at Charlton - after club legend Claude Makelele checked up on him.

The midfielder, 19, was shipped to the Championship side on loan after helping out Blues boss Frank Lampard during pre-season.

Gallagher has long been tipped as one for the future.

And the England Under-21 star already has four goals and one assist to his name already this term.

He recently struck a crucial goal in the 2-2 draw against Chelsea’s West London rivals Fulham.

And after being named on the bench for last season’s Europa League final, Gallagher seems to have caught the attention of Chelsea chiefs yet again.

Youth loan coach Makelele has been making regular visits to watch the star in action.

And he is said to have been blown away by Gallagher’s performances.

Charlton boss Lee Bowyer confirmed Makelele’s presence at the Fulham game, saying: “Conor isn’t bad… not a bad player!

“Has he surprised me? He’s scored one every two games, for a 19-year-old kid who’s never played men’s football before, he’ll surprise anyone.

“I think he’s even surprised Chelsea. I don’t think they knew how far he could go so soon.

“They had people come in on Thursday. Makelele came in to speak to us about the loan, how Conor is getting on, their thoughts on him and they’re delighted.

“Conor is a good player, one to watch in the future.”

Gallagher himself is delighted to be working under Bowyer, exclaiming: “He’s great. I’ve only worked under him for a couple of months now but I’ve loved it.

“He was a top midfielder back in the day and knows his stuff. He has played at the top level so it’s a lot to learn to make the box every time and that is how I’ve scored my goals this season.

“I am looking forward to working under him for the end of the season.”
