The 69-year-old Frenchman was inducted into the Legends of Football Hall of Fame in recognition of his work in the game and with the charity which uses music to enrich the lives of people with disability and life-limiting illness.

And though he could not attend in person, ex-Manchester United boss Ferguson made time to send a special video message to his old foe.

Ferguson said: "Hey Arsene, first of all I’m sorry I’m not there tonight. I’d have loved to have been there for you to be honoured by Nordoff Robins.

"It’s a fantastic charity and I’m really proud of you taking part in it.

"But most of all, for the career you had as a manager at Arsenal – absolutely fantastic.

"You are an absolute legend, and that’s why it’s called Legends tonight.

"So once again, I loved the competition against you, we had some great times and it’s wonderful you are getting the award tonight.

"So good luck, my blessings with you."

Fergson and Wenger enjoyed an intense rivalry for two decades as their United and Arsenal sides went toe-to-toe as the best teams in England for much of that period.

Though that feeling sometimes spilled over with incidents on the pitch, the pair always retained a deep respect for each other for the work they did.
