Man Utd criticism is spot on we have to shut up and work, says under-fire Fred
THE Manchester United legends sticking the boot into the current crop are right, said Fred.
Few players have had more flak than £52million misfit Fred, who had another miserable afternoon during Sunday’s 1-0 loss at Newcastle.
The ex-Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder has been reading up on United’s history and is aware of how far they have fallen since Sir Alex Ferguson retired just over six years ago.
Asked about the stinging criticism from ex-Red Devils, Fred said: “They are within their rights, they’ve won many titles with this club. We have to shut up and work on the pitch.
“Some critics are pointless — but many can offer me lessons.
“I like to read what people are saying about my performances. With that, I can try to get better.”
Sunday was only Fred’s 24th start since moving to United in June 2018.
He wants to help restore the club to its former glory, although that looks a long way off with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Co in 12th.
Fred, 26, told Esporte Interativo: “I do understand it.
“Every day when I arrive at the training ground, when I see those big letters with the name of the club, I pinch myself.
“So I know this club is gigantic. I like to read about its history, best players and historical moments.
“It hasn’t been great times for us — our rivals are winning titles and we’re not even in the Champions League. It makes our fans sad and I feel sad as well.
“This club deserves silverware and we’re going to fight to get better. We have to put United back in the place it should never have left.”
The Brazilian did not feature until the middle of September but has played in six of the last seven games.
And he revealed getting married in the summer meant he was late back for pre-season.
He said: “I started later than most of the squad so they were ahead of me.
“Now I’m feeling way better and more settled. I’m sure this season will be better for me and for United.”
Fred also believes Solskjaer needs to be given time to get things right.
He added: “It’s the beginning of his work — even Ferguson had difficult times in his first years. I’m positive everything is going to get better.”
