The 58-year-old took the drastic decision to drop SEVEN players ahead of the battle of the bottom two clash with Godoy Cruz.

Though it seemed to have been another stroke of footballing genius from the former Napoli star, after Gimnasia claimed a 4-2 win to lift themselves from the bottom of the table.

And in typical Maradona style, the enigmatic star led a wave of celebrations in the dressing room following a first win as manager of the club.

The World Cup winner proved his knees are still in top condition after undergoing surgery in the summer, as he wiggled his hips to the delight of the rest of the team.

Fans were ecstatic when Maradona was installed as coach a month ago following two years in the United Arab Emirates before a single season in charge of Mexican outfit Dorados.

Their outpouring of emotion was matched by Maradona, who wept on the pitch before addressing the Estadio Juan Carmelo Zerillo.

He even joined in with a favourite Argentine chant, that translates into "If you don't jump, you're an Englishman" to commemorate his Hand of God moment in 1986.

Goals from Leandro Contin, Ariel Matias Garcia and a double from Victor Ayala have seen Gimnasia move up to 23rd after four points from nine games.

Maradona still faces a fight to see the club escape relegation and avoid dropping down to the second-tier for the first time in eight years.

Gimnasia face another must-win clash when they face 21st Union at home on Saturday, with a win putting them just a point behind the Santa Fe outfit.
