MANCHESTER UNITED are without Paul Pogba for Thursday's trip to AZ Alkmaar after picking up an ankle knock.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has wrapped the Frenchman in cotton wool after a previous injury flared up in the draw with Arsenal.

Pogba felt discomfort having played the full 90 minutes and Wednesday's scans could diagnose as much as a three-game lay-off for the midfielder.

Players were pictured arriving at Carrington ahead of the trip to the Netherlands.

Pogba was among them before his scan and he didn't join his team-mates on the hop across the Channel.

After a shocking roof collapse at their home ground, AZ play on the artificial surface at ADO Den Haag's Kyocera Stadium and Solskjaer is said to be worried about his star's problem growing further.

The ankle injury first cropped up when Pogba twisted his ankle versus Southampton in August.

He subsequently sat out three games and returned for the match again Rochdale, again picking up a knock that also made him a doubt for Monday's 1-1 draw.

The club confirmed on Wednesday: "Following a specialist's opinion, Paul Pogba requires a period of further rest and conservative treatment for the foot injury he sustained during the game against Southampton in August.

"Updates will follow in due course."

United started their Europa League campaign with a narrow win over Astana and the game in Alkmaar promises to be one of the toughest they will face in Group L.

And yet The Times suggest Marcus Rashford could be rested with a view to Sunday's trip to Newcastle, despite him travelling with the squad.

Youngsters Brandon Williams, James Garner, Angel Gomes, Tahith Chong and Mason Greenwood are in the travelling party.

But absent are Anthony Martial, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Timothy Fosu-Mensah.

Luke Shaw misses out having returned to training after a thigh problem, and Solskjaer said last week he hopes to have the left-back fit to play before the upcoming international break.

And Aaron Wan-Bissaka joins him back in Manchester as he recovers from tonsillitis.
