Man Utd suffer worst start to season in 30 YEARS with Solskjaer’s record after 28 games now worse than Mourinho’s in same period before sacking
MANCHESTER UNITED are in the midst of their worst start to season in 30 YEARS with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's record a worrying omen.
Monday night's disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Arsenal has seen the Norwegian chief make a little piece of unwanted history.
Now Solskjaer's record is worse than that of Jose Mourinho in the same span before he was given the boot.
Man Utd got off to a blistering start to life under their new boss, racking up big win after big win.
But even despite that, Solskjaer has picked up just 49 points from his 28 Premier League games.
That tally is two points FEWER than Mourinho in his final 28 league games at Old Trafford.
Man Utd's 1989-90 nightmare under Fergie
THREE years into life at Manchester United and, unbelievable as it is to think, Sir Alex Ferguson was almost given the boot.
Seven games into the then-First Division and his United - long before their world-beating form of the 1990s - had picked up just seven points.
A thumping 4-1 win over Arsenal on the opening day of the season had seen Fergie's lot looking bright from the get-go.
But a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace saw the wheels fall off, before three losses in a row followed - at the hands of Derby, Norwich and Everton.
A 5-1 win over Millwall briefly threatened to turn the tide again, but a 5-1 loss at the hands of arch-rivals Manchester City quickly put Fergie back under the microscope.
The Scottish legend would go on to win 13 Premier League crowns - but at this stage he was nearly sacked.
Twice nearly crashing out of the FA Cup in the same season certainly did little to relax the board, either - with Mark Robins to thank on both occasions in tight wins over Nottingham Forest and Oldham.
United went on to win the cup that year - but finished an appalling 13th in the league.
Back in the present day and Solskjaer is hardly faring much better... but it would take an absolute miracle to go on to win what Ferguson did with the squad at his current disposal.
After seven games of the 2019-20 season, United sit TENTH in the Premier League with a meagre nine points.
Man Utd have won just two of those seven matches, scored just nine times and conceded seven, with Martin Keown suggesting they've lost their "aura".
The squad looks lost, bereft of talent and fading quickly despite a major summer investment.
Despite splashing a world-record £85million on defender Harry Maguire, as well as £50m on Aaron Wan-Bissaka, the club are drifting the wrong way.
Now, they are suffering their worst start to a season since the 1989-90 campaign - when they finished 13th and 31 points adrift of champions Liverpool.
Of course, both clubs have had a very different go of things in the subsequent 30 years, with United overtaking the Reds to become the most successful club in English top-flight football.
But now, Solskjaer's group sit a staggering 12 points behind league-leaders Liverpool and look set for a struggle to even break into the top six with the way they're playing.
