And Spurs chiefs were even ready to make a move for Southgate, 49, at the end of last season amid doubts over Poch's future, according to the .

Tottenham's current boss admitted he could leave if the club had won last season's Champions League final, claiming he might have "nothing left to achieve".

But of course Spurs came a cropper and lost 2-0 at the hands of Liverpool in Madrid.

Pochettino continued to be linked with Real Madrid and Manchester United over the summer after last season's success.

And the uncertainty surrounding the 47-year-old forced Daniel Levy to consider other options.

Under Southgate, Spurs stars Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Danny Rose and Eric Dier have all come on leaps and bounds at international level.

And Tottenham are said to be hopeful the ex-Middlesbrough defender would swap country for club if England are successful at next year's Euros.

But SunSport exclusively revealed Spurs chiefs are worried axing Pochettino will benefit their rivals and leave them out of pocket.
