Arsenal fans in meltdown over Xhaka becoming captain… but rival supporters think it’s hilarious
THE NEWS that Granit Xhaka is set to be announced as Arsenal's club captain has been met with agony by many Gooners.
Reports indicate that Unai Emery entrusted the decision to his squad, having originally picked a five-strong group of leaders to rotate the armband.
And on Friday news broke that Xhaka was to be named the official replacement of Laurent Koscielny, who controversially left Arsenal in the summer.
Many Gunners fans are ready to get behind the Swiss midfielder but others see him as a liability.
The reports happened to pop up on Xhaka's 27th birthday and critics used a club well-wishing post to vent their frustration.
Gooner Zaki wrote: "Announce six month holiday as birthday present."
Another, Yash, added: "Sell him as a gift."
While Ariss remarked: "Xhaka boom Xhaka out of my club."
And Aliwa lamented: "Doesn't deserve to wear the armband, he's a total banter in our team."
One fan accounted however, rebuffed: "These so called Arsenal fans are the worst. Highly aggressive children who never achieved anything in their life."
Fans of rival teams took aim at Arsenal as well, claiming it was further evidence the North London side had lost their way.
One Spurs fan commented with a mock-up of the Jose Mourinho meme reading: "I prefer not to laugh, if I laugh I am in big trouble."
An Everton fan joked: "Just realised I can’t laugh at Arsenal for making Xhaka their captain because ours runs off the pitch three times a week and hasn’t picked his head up for a cross since 2014."
A Chelsea fan added: "We also don't have a captain at Chelsea, but Xhaka at Arsenal!?"
