LAURA KENNY’S bid to win world championship gold just six months after giving birth was ruined by an American masterclass.

The 25-year-old and her British pals were leading USA in the women’s team pursuit but a stunning surge from their rivals over the second 2km won gold.

Kenny and cycling star husband Jason welcomed baby Albert into the world last August and she has embarked on a post-natal mission to make these championships.

But Kenny, Katie Archibald, Elinor Barker, Emily Nelson were outdone by the team they beat at the Rio Olympics, coming away with the silver medal in 4min 16.980 and 1.311sec behind the Americans.

Meanwhile GB's men ensured a bright post-Bradley Wiggins future with a crushing team pursuit triumph in Apeldoorn.

The relatively inexperienced quartet of Ed Clancy, Kian Emadi, Ethan Hayter and Charlie Tanfield overcame a fast-starting Denmark to claim gold in 3min 53.389sec, just three seconds shy of their world record.

They were a massive 1.843sec ahead of the Danes after 4km.

Hayter, 19, and Tanfield, 20, are the rising stars that will be the future of British Cycling's Olympic juggernaut, while Emadi, 25, has incredibly converted from a track sprinter to the longer event.

Three-time Olympic gold medallist Clancy said: "I'm happy just to still be here. I'm 33 years old in a couple of weeks and when you're riding around with Ethan and Charlie at 19 and 20 years old, it keeps you going.

"I've still got a massive passion and when you get it right and win it's really good."
