Sir Bradley Wiggins rides Ghent Six: End of the road for Britain’s cycling legend – or is it?

SIR BRADLEY WIGGINS is riding the final race of his stellar career - but this has yet to be confirmed by the man himself.

The mystery over whether or not Wiggins will hang up his wheels after Sunday remains.

The cycling-mad Belgian press have been trying to ask the mod star if he will retire, but like he has been doing in the UK, he will not talk while a cloud hangs over his name.

Wiggins, 36, was born in Ghent to an Australian father and a mother from London.

But he had a rocky relationship his whole life with his dad Gary, who abandoned young Bradley and his mum in 1982.

Yesterday he posted an Instagram image of a promotional poster from the 1977 event, with his father's name on.

He has previously said that this would be his last ever event as a pro rider, after competing in the London Six Day last month.

At the end of that ride, Wiggins again snubbed the British media, but did talk to the event website.

He said: "Do you know what, I've enjoyed it that much, I just don't know at the moment.

"I still love riding my bike, I love racing and who wouldn't want to come back with a week like this and the crowds like this? It's been incredible really."

There is STILL a cloud hanging over British Cycling and Team Sky as they are investigated over an alleged use of a therapeutic use exemption - or doctor's note - to give Wiggins a corticosteroid in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Mark 'Manx Missile' Cavendish is Wiggins' partner again for the Ghent Six, as he was in London two weeks ago.

It is easy to forget that the 31-year-old road sprinter has had arguably the best year of his career since 2011.

Cavendish won track world championship madison gold, a stunning four stages at the Tour de France and Olympic silver.

He was then pipped to road world championship win in Doha as Peter Sagan just beat him.

The Dimension Data rider will definitely be back in the saddle for his road team next year.  He is looking to close in on the record 34 Tour de France career stage wins held by Eddie Merckx, with Cavendish currently having 30 under his belt.

But as for Wiggins, the question over whether is career is truly over may be answered by Sunday night - his late father's birthday.

If that is game over, it would be a fitting way for him to bow out, in the city of his birth.

Don't bet against him saddling up next year, though.
