And Ball had Azhar Ali trapped lbw in the second over after lunch for seven, before Steven Finn removed Younis Khan as the tourists limped to tea on 158-4.

Chris Woakes did the earlier damage for England, dismissing Pakistan openers Mohammed Hafeez and Shan Masood, both caught by wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow.

But Ball made the breakthrough at the start of the second session, as Ali failed in a review after the umpire raised his fingers and replays showed the ball was clipping leg stump.

The experienced Khan was next to go, lazily clipping straight to Moeen Ali at mid-wicket off Broad for 33.

But skipper Misbah-ul-Haq was 48 not out at tea, having been dropped by Joe Root at second slip off Steven Finn.

Pakistan’s No6 Asad Shafiq was the other man unbeaten on 12.

Yet England know they only need to break this partnership before they can get into the tourists’ tail.
