Canelo vs Golovkin trilogy is on after Mexican’s next two opponents are rubber-stamped
GENNADY GOLOVKIN'S dream trilogy bout with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez looks closer than ever after he was rubber-stamped as one of the Mexican's next two possible rivals.
The Kazakhstani star, 37, called on his nemesis last month to step into the ring again and complete the three-fight saga.
According to The Athletic's Mike Coppinger, DAZN have approved only two opponents for Alvarez, 28, for his next fight - Golovkin and Sergey Kovalev.
Canelo was believed to be targeting the Russian WBO light-heavyweight king in his pursuit of becoming a four-division champion.
But Kovalev has reportedly snubbed him and is set to face mandatory challenger Anthony Yarde in Russia this September, paving the way for the GGG trilogy bout.
Golovkin first drew with the Mexican in 2017 before controversially losing his WBA and WBC middleweight titles to him on points last year in Las Vegas.
Canelo insisted he was keen on a trilogy bout after outpointing Danny Jacobs in May.
And GGG, following his stunning performance against Steve Rolls in June, claimed he was ready for a third showdown with his arch-enemy.
He said: "I feel great, I feel like a new baby.
