Tyson Fury’s dad opens up about son’s depression battle and comeback
JOHN FURY has revealed it was like “looking after a newborn baby” while his son was battling depression.
After winning the unified heavyweight titles against Wladimir Klitschko in November 2015, Tyson Fury began a battle against personal demons.
Falling into depression, the Gypsy King turned to alcohol and drugs while losing his belts out of the ring.
With no ambitions to ever pick up a pair of gloves again, Fury contemplated taking his own life in order to end it all.
But after meeting trainer Ben Davison and finding inspiration to get back on his feet, the pair made a comeback plan with their relationship blossoming.
Fury beat Sefer Seferi and Francesco Pianeta on his comeback trail last year and despite largely outboxing Deontay Wilder in December, a contentious draw left the Brit without the WBC title.
The Gypsy King faces Tom Schwarz on his Las Vegas debut tonight and dad John will work as a pundit for the fight on BT Sport.
Speaking of his son's depression, Fury Sr revealed he fought “tooth and nail” to help his kid return to the ring.
He told BT Sport: "If he goes under, I go under and it's my job to make sure that doesn't happen.
"We fought tooth and nail, it was like looking after a newborn baby.
"The Deontay Wilder fight came out of the blue - I wasn't best pleased about it but it played a big part in his recovery."
