Deontay Wilder vows to finally fight Anthony Joshua for undisputed crown

Following his impressive first round win over Dominic Breazeale, Wilder urged fans to 'be patient' for an agreement when talks resume

DEONTAY WILDER vowed to finally fight Anthony Joshua — and decide who is undisputed heavyweight king.

WBO, WBA and IBF belt holder Joshua has wanted a mega-money fight with the unbeaten American for almost two years.

Since Wilder, 33, and AJ, 29, box on rival American networks, talk of a titanic showdown between them had died down.

But the Bronze Bomber promised: “This Joshua fight is going to happen — I believe in all of my heart it will happen.

“It is our duty and our obligation to do it for the fans. All parties involved are talking.

“It will take our teams to sit down, handle things, squash everything and get it done for the fans.

“The big fights will happen, that way we all benefit.

“We risk our lives in here — so let us get our time to iron out our differences.

“Next time discussions between me and Joshua come around, I think it will get done. I want people to be patient.”

SUMMER BREAZE

Wilder’s mandatory defence against fellow American Breazeale in New York was a disappointing match-up for fans.

Especially after his thrilling, and controversial, draw with Brit Tyson Fury on December 1.

But Watford hero Joshua and Fury are expected to claim similarly one-sided wins in their next fights.

AJ faces chubby Andy Ruiz Jr at New York’s iconic Madison Square Garden on June 1.

While the Gypsy King, 30, takes on unheralded German fighter Tom Schwarz two weeks later.

But AJ’s promoter Eddie Hearn insists he will pull out all the stops to help decide the one true heavyweight king.

This is the fight that will change the sport globally.

Eddie Hearn

He said: “That was an impressive win for Deontay on Saturday — he’s exciting to watch.

“Now that Wilder’s taken care of business, AJ needs to do the same against Ruiz Jr.

“The fight with AJ and Wilder is the biggest in boxing. All being well in two weeks, it must happen next.

“No excuses. This is the fight that will change the sport globally. It’s a legacy fight and AJ wants it so bad.

“Two big, fast, dangerous and fearless world heavyweight champions that can turn the lights out with a blink of the eye. It’s a must.”

Joshua’s US debut would be the perfect time to announce his next fight — and Wilder hinted he could be ringside.

Despite being expected to make two more low-key defences against Adam Kownacki and Luis Ortiz, before facing either of his Brit rivals, he is open to gatecrashing AJ’s New York party.

Wilder said: “If that date is open for me, you may see Deontay Wilder there.

“When it’s a good scrap, a good fight that people want to see, you might find me there. I can’t promise you — but we’ll see.”
