Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez will beat Gennady Golovkin, says Amir Khan, as September middleweight boxing mega-fight edges nearer
AMIR KHAN believes Saul Canelo Alvarez will beat middleweight boxing king Gennady Golovkin.
Talks are ongoing between Canelo’s Golden Boy Promotions Team and Golovkin in the hope that the two will face each other later this year.
As ever in boxing, the only major stumbling block is the money on the table, but both fighters appear keen to thrash a deal out. A provisional date of September 16 has even been pencilled in.

And Khan, who suffered a crushing sixth round knockout to Alvarez in May 2016, believes the Mexican can shock the world and end Golovkin’s dominance.
Speaking to , the Bolton-born boxer said: “I think a lot of people underestimate Canelo. [He] is a good fighter. He’s very strong. He moves quite well. I give that fight to Canelo honestly. I even underestimate Canelo before fighting him.
“Even if Canelo fought Triple G, I honestly think he beats Triple G. A lot of people underestimate him, I don’t know why.
“I’ve been in the ring with Canelo. I’ve never been in the ring with Triple G, but I’ve been in the ring with Canelo and he’s hard to hit.
“He’s quite tricky and like I said he hits very hard, so you have to give him that respect. I think that he gives a lot of people problems.”
First up for Golovkin, however, will be a mandatory defence of his IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight belts against Daniel Jacobs on March 18 at Madison Square Garden, New York.
Meanwhile, as SunSport reported, Canelo has been installed as the mandatory challenger for Billy Joe Saunders’ WBO middleweight title
This means negotiations will resume over potentially having a fight in the first half of 2017.
