Boxer Patrick Day remains in ‘coma and critical condition’ after suffering brutal KO on Usyk undercard
PATRICK DAY is in a coma after the vicious knockout blow he suffered in Saturday's defeat to Charles Conwell.
The undercard bout before Oleksandr Usyk's debut heavyweight fight ended abruptly in the tenth round.
Such was the force of Cronwell's punch, Day crashed to the canvas and received treatment before being stretchered away.
Reports emerged soon after the Chicago fight that the 27-year-old required brain surgery at the city's Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
And it has since been confirmed that Day is in a coma and a critical condition.
A spokesperson for his DiBella Entertainment promoter told : "Patrick Day suffered a traumatic brain injury during his bout on Saturday night. He was rushed to Northwestern Memorial hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.
"As of Sunday evening, Patrick is in a coma caused by the injury. He is in extremely critical condition.
"On behalf of Patrick’s team, we appreciate the outpouring of support, prayers, and offers of assistance from all corners of the boxing community.
"Updates will be provided as circumstances change. In the meantime, we ask that the privacy of Patrick and his family be respected during this difficult time."
Several boxing figures have spoken highly of the super welterweight's character and bright personality since the knockout.
Victorious opponent Conwell joined the chorus of support for the American over social media.
He tweeted: "My thoughts and deepest prayers are with Patrick Day and his family right now. His family will provide further information at the appropriate time. Please keep Pat in your prayers."

Super feathweight boxing champ Gervonta Davis added: "Damn man praying for Patrick Day."
Respected trainer and analyst Teddy Atlas posted: "A special kid, Patrick Day, is hurt and needs our thoughts and prayers. We’re with you, Patrick. And we won’t give up."
