Dwain Chambers blows athletics comeback aged 40 with false start at British Indoor Championships
Former world indoor champion admits he felt like a fossil racing against rivals half his age but hasn't ruled out an outdoor season after jumping the gun in the semi-final
DWAIN CHAMBERS blew his big comeback to athletics at the age of 40 by being disqualified for a false-start at the British Indoor Championships.
Chambers made the shock decision to return to sprinting after recording some quick times training over the winter and was hoping to claim the British 60metres title.
But the former world indoor champion jumped the gun in the semi-final and was left ruing blowing his big chance.
He said: "That wasn’t how I saw it going originally, but these things happen. I’ve had a blast, it has been awesome. It’s great to be back.
"It's kinda weird to race against people half my age. To be honest, the funny thing about this was I didn’t recognise any of the faces.
"It was intimidating with the crowd, the lights, because I have been away from it so long. Even the gun sounds weird, the blocks have changed the environment has changed – I almost feel like a fossil being resurrected and coming back into the sport.
"That part is going to take a little bit of time to get used to.
"I’ve got a buzz, I just wanted to come and compete, I’ve missed it being out of the sport for almost two years, I love watching it but I also love participating in it.
"Unfortunately it didn’t work out today.
"I’m just having a little bit of fun, but I may still have to redeem myself, that’s not the way I like to perform.

"I’m going to watch the final, drown my sorrows for a little bit and then see what happens for the next season.
"Possibly outdoors - I will probably walk out there with my tail between my legs unfortunately.
"The body feels absolutely fine, I’ve still got my six-pack so I’m doing something right.
"I have had to learn to manage my body, gone are the days of being able to train and go home and rest. I’ve got three kids, a job,
I’m having to juggle these pieces at the same time. These things happen."
