Blundering Arsenal top league in errors leading to goals in past two years… and Mustafi is only fourth worst offender

ARSENAL were their own worst enemies when dropping points in the North London derby on Sunday - and extended their lead atop a nightmare blunders leaderboard.

Since the start of the 2017/18 season, no club has made as many errors leading to goals as the Gunners.

Bernd Leno's hapless flap that allowed Christian Eriksen to open the scoring counted as their 29th mishap in 80 games.

On his own, the German has contributed six major errors having memorably been responsible for ending Unai Emery's 22-game unbeaten run last season, when he completely misjudged a cross and gifted Southampton a late winner.

Arsenal should have perhaps seen this coming when scouting Leno and witnessing his cringeworthy miss-kick of a simple backpass that bobbled into his own net when playing for Bayer Leverkusen in October 2015.

Only a month later, a Champions League outing versus BATE Borisov saw him allow a tame shot to mystifyingly roll through his grasp.

Another major offender was Petr Cech and his six errors leading to goals in the 2017/18 season alone.

A four-time Premier League title winner with Chelsea, the goalkeeper arrived at Arsenal as a bit of a coup but endured a tough time of it in North London.

Summing it up best was a terrible attempted clearance at Swansea that gave Jordan Ayew a tap-in during a 3-1 defeat.

Following not far behind is Granit Xhaka on five and yet the Swiss midfielder's latest dodgy moment, giving away the penalty for Spurs to make it 2-0 last weekend, doesn't technically count towards this stat.

Not surprisingly, oft-berated defender Shkodran Mustafi has also been a culprit with three individual errors leading to goals.

But that only makes him the fourth-worst offender at Emirates Stadium.

Other teams guilty of taking their eye off the ball are Southampton and Bournemouth, with 24 and 23 errors respectively over the past two seasons.

The Cherries even boast the division leader in this regard, Asmir Begovic committing a huge ten major mishaps.

And the opposite end of the table is predictably dominated by the Prem's top teams.

Chelsea lead the way with a mere eight individual errors in this period, followed by the quartet of Liverpool, Manchester City, Burnley and Brighton on nine.

And the Blues have already sold off one of their worst offenders in this category, David Luiz... who has joined Arsenal!
