Federer-loving Wimbledon fans slammed for booing Djokovic and showing lack of respect during final

WIMBLEDON fans were blasted for booing Novak Djokovic during yesterday's final - with three-time champion Boris Becker insisting the Serb deserves more respect.

Roger Federer is almost always the crowd favourite when he plays, especially on Centre Court at Wimbledon.

So it was no surprise he was cheered on by the 15,000 in attendance yesterday.

But many felt the spectators crossed the line with their treatment of opponent Djokovic.

The world No1, 32, eventually won a dramatic contest 7-6 1-6 7-6 4-6 13-12, securing victory with a deciding-set tie-break for the first time in a singles match at SW19.

That was despite the crowd getting on his back, clapping some errors and jeering him in the final set.

On one stage, eight-time champion Federer challenged a call but it wasn't immediately spotted by the chair umpire or Djokovic, so the Serbian then questioned the umpire when he thought his opponent had made a late appeal.

Becker, the youngest man to win Wimbledon and a former coach of Djokovic, gave credit to the champion for using the negative fans to his favour.

He said: "It triggered him to fight in the fifth set.

"He got a bit riled and gave some stares to people in the crowd but that's how he works, that's how he ticks.

Federer is the greatest of all time here and has the right to get that love, but on the other side you have to respect a four-time champion a little bit more.

"There comes a point when you get frustrated, but I thought he handled himself well and was mentally well prepared.

"I hope next year, if they played again, it would be more even.

"He came into the party that was the Roger and Rafa [Nadal] party and he became the party pooper.

"Now, after 16 majors, people have got to wake up to the greatness of Novak Djokovic."

Djokovic is now just two Grand Slam titles behind Rafael Nadal and four off Federer, who is widely considered as the Greatest Of All Time.

And plenty on Twitter were delighted to see the Serb prevail in front of the partisan Federer-loving crowd.

One said: "I get that it’s a pro-Federer crowd but the booing of Djokovic at Wimbledon was undeserved and sort of pathetic. Good, fair match."
