Wimbledon 2019: Andy Murray reveals Serena Williams contacted him first about incredible mixed doubles partnership
ANDY MURRAY has revealed Serena Williams contacted him first about playing mixed doubles at Wimbledon.
The Scot and the American, two of the leading singles players of their generation, will form an incredible partnership at Wimbledon later this week.
The pair will play German Andreas Mies and Chile's Alexa Guarachi and it’s likely to be one of the most watched matches of the tournament.
According to Murray, it was Williams’ long-standing coach Patrick Mouratoglou who made the first move after learning in the press that the former world No1 had been snubbed by several top stars.
Murray, 32, said: “It only happened a couple of days ago really.
“Beforehand I had been speaking to a couple of players about it but I can’t remember what day it was I hit with Bob Bryan, Wednesday or Thursday over there.
“I chatted to him about the mixed and to one or two others about it then sort of debated whether or not to play.
“(My coach Jamie) Delgado had had a message from Patrick saying if I was fixed up for doubles.
“Jamie said no, and then Patrick said would it be of interest to play with Serena?
“We kind of chatted about it for a couple of days.

“I know she had had a bit of problems with her knee this year and both sides kind of wanted to see how her match went before we did the final part.
“She felt fine yesterday and I saw her briefly today – she seems like she is up for it!
“The opportunity to play with Serena, one of the best tennis players of all time and one of the biggest female athletes ever, is something I may never get another chance to do.”
