British youngster Paul Jubb qualifies for Eastbourne with biggest scalp of his career – thanks to time surfing the internet

PAUL JUBB claimed the biggest scalp of his career – thanks to his time surfing the internet.

The rising star of British tennis qualified for this week’s Eastbourne International with a 4-6 6-3 6-2 triumph over Russian world No81 Andrey Rublev.

It is the first time Jubb has beaten a player inside the top 100, and the win means his ranking will rise significantly from 579th in the world.

The 19-year-old from Hull said: “Rublev is one of the guys I look up to massively and spent many years watching on YouTube for inspiration.

“To share the court with him was nice, and then to get the win was great.

"I’ve had a few matches in the past weeks that I’ve won, having lost the first set.”

FULL-TIME JUBB

Jubb has a wildcard for Wimbledon and could surprise a few of the seeds.

He said: “I feel good on grass. I’ve been able to adapt to it pretty well. It’s a surface on which I can do well.”

Jo Konta, whose parents live close to Devonshire Park venue for the Eastbourne tournament, recorded a 6-2 6-4 win over Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska.

Anett Kontaveit beat Britain’s Harriet Dart 3-6 6-4 6-2 while Heather Watson lost 7-5 6-2 to France’s Alize Cornet.
