Conor Benn obliterates Jussi Koivula with brutal second-round KO… despite losing the first
CONOR BENN survived a scary first round to obliterate Jussi Koivula with a brutal second-round finish his father would have been proud of.
The 22-year-old Ilford welterweight must have ignored all of his dad’s advice as he endured a nightmare start, with a one-sided opener going to the visiting Finn.
But the son of 1990s British boxing icon Nigel roared off of his stool for the second stanza and battered the 35-year-old man senseless to carry on his march up the rankings.
The dreadlocked brute said: “He tried to bully me and treat me like a young boy but I was not having any of it. I wanted to let him know I am Conor Benn.
“I think I did box and then I applied my aggression. Two or three fights ago I might not have done that. I am not the fighter I was when I first started.
“I was not hurt at all, nothing he did even woke me up.”
The rising prospect FaceTimed his dad on Wednesday morning to find the retired icon swotting up on his son’s 15th professional opponent in his home cinema in Sydney, Australia.
RUTHLESS SECOND RD STOPPAGE
And they will be showing the 15th win of his all-action career on the giant family screen after he put in a ruthless second-round showing, dropping the experienced three-time European challenger twice before the referee saved him from serious harm.
The fight swung so dramatically after Benn looked in deep trouble from the very first bell.
An Instant right hand from Koivula landed and most of his early jabs found a home.
A left hook knocked Benn back onto the ropes but and he looked close to hitting the deck moments later when he suffered another whack.
Koivula, 13 years older, tried to ‘old man’ his inexperienced rival with a few underhand tricks but he survived the onslaught.
Benn started the second with a crisp one-two but Koivula was oozing experience and showing no signs of underdog nerves.
But a crushing left hook out of nowhere sent the visitor barrelling to the floor and he smell of blood filled Benn’s young nostrils.
Only fools rush in but Benn looked an evil genius in the way he rushed the veteran again and dropped him for a second time close to his corner.
And the visitor was rescued from a serious pasting before the second bell was heard.
