Roger Federer says his tennis shirts were not inspired by UPS

Eagle-eyed viewers noticed the striking similarities between Federer's clothes for his first-round win and the outfits worn by the American firm's courier servicemen

ROGER Federer denies his polo T-shirts were based on the uniforms of UPS courier men.

The Swiss tennis star has a keen eye for fashion – as well as tennis silverware – and is close friends with Vogue editor-in-chief Dame Anna Wintour.

Yet his latest series of outfits have been embarrassingly compared to the clothes worn by the American multinational courier giant by some tennis fans on Twitter

The 20-time major winner wore the brown and brief ensemble during his first round win over Italian Lorenzo Sonego on Sunday.

When it pointed out to Federer in the press conference for his second-round victory – and then asked if he fancied becoming a brand ambassador – the 37-year-old laughed it off saying he was not aware of similarities.

Federer said: “I can tell you they were not the inspiration for this outfit.

“It was more trying to go back in time a little bit to the 1970s, you know, and I haven’t worn brown ever and cream.
“I thought it would be a nice look. Uniqlo (my sponsors) thought the same.

“When we saw it, we all liked it. I like it.
“I know these kind of colours always stir a debate.

“You could always go safe and do blue with stripes in Paris and say it’s always going to work.
“But we did it many times before in the past, and so we thought brown would be the way to go. Old-school stripes. Maybe more vintage looking.

“I like it. I feel comfortable in it.”
