Andy Murray could appear at Wimbledon as chiefs consider bending rules for two-time champ

The Brit has not set a return date but could use protected ranking to make an appearance at SW19

Andy Murray could have the rules bent slightly for him to play at Wimbledon this year

WIMBLEDON chiefs will consider bending their rules to allow Andy Murray enough time to be fit for this summer’s tournament.

The two-time singles champ is recovering from hip resurfacing surgery at the end of January.

He has not given a date on a potential return but could use his protected ranking to enter Wimbledon or apply for a wildcard before the June 18 committee deadline.

The draw takes place on June 28 and the championships begin on July 1.

Murray, 31, was filmed last week hitting balls from a stationary position and mum Judy is “cautiously optimistic” he will be fit for SW19.

The Scot, who missed last year’s Wimbledon through injury, is on the entry list for Queen’s, which starts on June 17.

All England Club chairman Philip Brook said: “There have been no discussions with Andy yet. It’s too soon to know the answer to that one.

“Should he wish to apply for a wildcard he would do so in the normal way. We have a meeting on June 18 to decide on which players receive wildcards.”

Asked if that deadline could be extended for Muzza until the draw, CEO Richard Lewis said: “We’ve held wildcards back before.

“If Andy came forward with a strong case I am sure we would work with him.”

The prize pot has increased from £34million to £38m, with the singles champions each earning a record £2.35m.

A shot clock will not be implemented at this year’s event, but the new retractable roof over Court One is going to be in use.

Tournament bosses will scrap the postal ticket ballot in favour of an online version for 2020.
