More than 250 journalists and broadcasters from around the world reported on the race from the centre close to the finishing line along The Mall.

Vikki’s widower, Ian Ridley, a distinguished sports writer and author, says he is incredibly proud her memory lives on.

Ridley, 64, said: “It showed what a splash and impression she made on people down the years.

“She’s one of the great athletics correspondents, who had good contacts, people trusted her and she got great stories as well.

“Vikki had no fear or favour as an athletics journalist.

“She always loved London Marathon week and would have loved getting stuck into the Farah and Gebrselassie row.”

Vikki was the first female staff sports reporter on a national tabloid newspaper when she joined The Sun in 1995.
