Wehrlein crossed the line in second place but a penalty meant he finished the race in sixth place.

The ex-F1 driver received a five-second penalty after cutting a corner on the final lap after pressure from Di Grassi.

Nissan's Oliver Rowland and Sebastien Buemi were third and fourth respectively before the final lap but did not finish the race after also running out of energy.

Audi star Di Grassi said he felt like a rockstar on the podium in front of a packed-out Mexican out crowd.

Di Grassi said: "I didn't actually [think I could win], I knew I had more energy and knew I had to put pressure on Pascal and tried every move I could, even in the chicane."

He added: "When I crossed the line and won the race, my adrenaline just went through the roof.

"I was super happy, I could hear the crowd cheering, it was an unforgettable day.

"The podium, in front of 50,000 people, you feel like a rockstar.

"Every Formula E race is crazy but this one really exceeded expectations."

Formula E teams were caught out after a red flag was called following a huge crash between Nelson Piquet Jr and Jean-Eric Vergne.

Piquet Jr went airborne after clipping Vergne's rear-right tyre, which led to a 25 minute delay in the race.

The Brazilian was quick to say he was okay following the crash, while Vergne was able to continue and finish in 13th.

Sam Bird fought from the back of the grid to finish in the points in ninth place.

The Brit said he would need a miracle to score points after an issue with his car prevented him from registering a lap in qualifying.

Meanwhile Felipe Massa picked up his first set of points in Formula E after finishing in eighth, having started third.
