Defending champion Jean-Eric Vergne says Formula E’s new format is wrong
Frenchman says races are no longer dependant on energy saving
JEAN-ERIC VERGNE has slammed Formula E’s new race format.
The defending champion is yet to win a race since the all-electric series switched their format to 45 minutes plus one lap.
The Frenchman fumed FE are moving away from their roots because drivers are less dependant on energy saving.
Vergne said: “The problem is I'm quite stressed out.
“The race format of Formula E is wrong, there is no room for energy saving which is the core of Formula E.
“It’s all relying on qualifying and since I’m in group 1, I probably won't get the best part of the track, so I don’t think everything is really fair at the moment.
“So I’m trying to find something, I probably cannot win at the moment.”
Formula E split the drivers into four groups for qualifying, with the top six drivers entering a super pole to fight to be at the top of the grid.
The 28-year-old has raced in the innovative championship since it began in 2014 and he is hopeful they will reconsider the current format.
The Techeetah driver added: “Hopefully the race format will change in the future.
“It will be more what Formula E is all about which means energy saving and we’re [Techeetah] quite good at that.
“I will give my best, maybe group 1 (qualifying) will be good and maybe I can go and win but that’s all I can hope for.”
