The fight was originally announced in a press conference a week ago with Mayweather agreeing to take on the unbeaten fighter at the Roppongi Hill Club in Saitama, Japan.

It was unclear if the fight would be under MMA rules in the Octagon or in the ring with boxing regulations.

But just three days later, Mayweather, 41, took to Instagram to announce it was all off, claiming he "never agreed to the bout" in the first place.

That appeared to be the end of the sensational comeback for the 50-0 legendary boxer.

Now, though, RIZIN claim it could still happen.

RIZIN said: "I apologise for the confusion.

"RIZIN Executive Committee Nobuyuki Sakakibara is currently discussing the implementation based on the basic agreement concluded between us and Mayweather player.

"I hope we will have a clear announcement next week."
