Boca Juniors and River Plate ban away fans from attending Copa Libertadores final
Two clubs have not played each other in the competition since their last tie in 2015 was abandoned because of fan violence
BOCA JUNIORS and River Plate have agreed to ban away fans from both legs of the Copa Libertadores final.
The showdown between the two clubs will be their first meeting in the competition since a clash in 2015 was abandoned as a result of fan violence.
A statement released by Boca read: "This was agreed on Monday afternoon.
"A meeting was held with presidents of both clubs, Daniel Angelici and Rodolfo D'Onofrio, in the Argentine Football Association headquarters with its president Claudio Tapia present.
"At the meeting, the presidents of both clubs agreed that despite the local and international appeal generated by the Superclasico with the presence of both sets of fans, this could create problems for members of both clubs.
"In addition to the 4,000 seats for the away fans, thousands of other seats would also have had to be restricted in order to place an empty space in between as a safe area.
"This would mean considerably narrowing down the available space for the home fans."
Boca secured their spot in the final after a 4-2 aggregate win over Brazilian side Palmeiras.
River Plate beat Gremio 2-1 in the second-leg of their last match in the competition to move one step closer to the silverware.
The first leg will take place at Boca's La Bombonera on Saturday before the next meeting at River's El Monumental on November 24.
Boca will be hoping to win the competition for the seventh time - which will equal the record set by Independiente.
And River will be aiming to secure their fourth Copa Libertadores title after their heroics in 2015.
