And it was met with furious responses by social media users.

One Twitter reply read: "Would that comment be made though if it was the mens team?".

Another social media post said: "Does a man run the Lionesses Twitter account?"

“Scrub up well” really ? It’s 2018, not 1960," remarked another incensed individual.

Phil Neville's side remain unbeaten following their two friendlies in October.

The Lionesses were hoping to build on their impressive 1-0 victory over Brazil women on Saturday at the home of Premier League outfit Fulham.

However, ex-Manchester United man Neville will have been frustrated that his side didn't pick up another win - after dominating proceedings by and large.

They looked to be heading for a second straight victory after Fran Kirby - who also notched against the Brazilians - found the net after 21 minutes.

However, Clare Polkinghorne struck six minutes from time to ensure an under-strength Australian side came away with a 1-1 draw.
