The 35-year-old beat a high-class field in a time of 2hr 05min 11sec.

He is the first Brit to win the Chicago race since Paul Evans in 1996.

Farah burst clear of Ethiopia’s Mosinet Geremew in the final half-mile and celebrated with his trademark ‘Mobot’ move.

He said: "It was great to run with Galen, who won last year, then to be able to come back and win it for myself.

"The conditions weren't great and everyone was thinking about conditions rather than time, but towards the end we picked it up.

"I felt good towards the end of the race. At the beginning I felt a bit sluggish but overall I'm very happy with it."

He later Tweeted: "What an amazing day!! European record and first marathon victory!!! I love Chicago!!!"

Kenyan runner Brigid Kosgei, who was a runner up in London and last year in Chicago, won the women's title in 2hr 18min 35sec.
