Danny Drinkwater ‘not planning to quit Chelsea while earning £100,000-a-week sitting on bench’

The midfielder has struggled to prove his price tag since arriving at Stamford Bridge, but will hold off leaving West London until the right offer comes along

DANNY DRINKWATER may not be a part of Maurizio Sarri’s master plan, but he isn’t in a rush to leave Chelsea while he’s still pocketing £100,000 a week.

The midfielder was linked with a whole host of clubs this summer, but nothing came to fruition and he remained at Stamford Bridge.

West Ham and Leicester were two Premier League clubs who were rumoured to have entered the race to sign Drinkwater, but didn’t make their move before Deadline Day.

And the 28-year-old’s wage bill seemed too high for many Championship sides.

The midfielder has struggled to prove his, after his first season at the club was beset by injury.

But according to the , Drinkwater is prepared to sit it out on the bench at Chelsea for the remainder of the season if the right offer isn’t made in January.

Chelsea have got off to a flying start this season under Sarri, having won or drawn all their fixtures.

And Drinkwater has yet to feature as he’s deemed surplus to requirements.

Sarri has got both Jorginho and N’Golo Kante playing how he wants in midfield, which has pushed Drinkwater even further down the pecking order.

But the former England international is prepared to warm the bench until an offer comes in that he fancies.

Chelsea may well offer Drinkwater out on a loan deal in January.

Or the Foxes could come calling again, but when they showed an interest in their former midfielder they wanted him at a cut price.

Drinkwater’s appearances are likely to be limited as there are a whole host of players ahead of him in Sarri’s order of preference, including Jorginho, Kante, Ross Barkley and Cesc Fabregas.

Even Ruben Loftus Cheek, who returned to Stamford Bridge after a loan spell this summer, is ahead of Drinkwater in the pecking order.
