This endearing event encapsulates all that's good about modern day sport: world stars at the top of their game involved in intense rivalry that whips up phenomenal interest worldwide.

Rather like the World Cup, whether you are really interested in golf the nature of the contest takes over for three wild, roller-coaster days from Friday-Sunday.

And what a contest. Tiger Woods has enjoyed an amazing career but his Ryder Cup record isn't up to much and nor is Phil Mickelson's.

Conversely, Ian Poulter always seems to pull something out of the fire and Sergio Garcia is likely to belie a run of poor form to give Europe a boost.
