Canelo Alvarez set to fight on December 15 with potential Gennady Golovkin trilogy showdown

SAUL ALVAREZ'S promoter Oscar De La Hoya has revealed that the Mexican is targeting a December 15 return to the ring following his win over Gennady Golovkin.

The Kazakh King - who lost his WBA and WBC middleweight titles to Canelo - could get the chance to avenge the first loss of his professional career to complete a trilogy of bouts.

Despite Alvarez winning a majority decision with judges scoring Saturday's clash 115-113, 114-114 and 115-113, many believed GGG edged out the close affair.

Following their first fight in Las Vegas last year - where again many thought Golovkin deserved the victory - Canelo changed his game plan, as he looked to control the centre of the ring.

And according to De La Hoya, the 28-year-old could be back out in just under three months time.

Speaking to , the Golden Boy said: "We will get on a call and discuss it with Team Canelo and decide if he will fight on December 15.

Gennady Golovkin storms out of the ring after controversial loss to Saul Alvarez

"That's the date he would fight, but we don't know the opponent yet."

De La Hoya - a former six-weight world champion - has revealed that David Lemieux is in the running to face Alvarez,

He added: "There's nobody in mind yet. Canelo is coming off a tough fight. But that's how disciplined and dedicated he is that he wants to fight again this year in December.

“[Lemieux] is definitely in the running, but nothing is for sure. Canelo wants to fight anybody."

"There are plenty of choices. Once I get the green light [from Canelo on Thursday] when we talk to him I will get moving."

De La Hoya also revealed that Alvarez could be fighting outside of Las Vegas, with New York’s Madison Square Garden a possible venue.

He said: “We're going to talk to our partners at AEG and the MGM [who jointly own T-Mobile Arena] and explore other possibilities like New York and The Garden.

"You have to fight at The Garden some time in your career. It's where all the greats have fought."
