Serena Williams handed £13,000 fine for US Open Final meltdown despite collecting £1.4m prize money
The American, 36, labelled the umpire, Carlos Ramos, a "thief" and "liar" in a spectacular outburst - as Naomi Osaka achieved US Open glory at her expense
Osaka, 20, kept her focus to become the first-ever Japanese to win a Grand Slam.
Williams launched a tirade of abuse at umpire Carlos Ramos, after previously getting a warning for coaching from the stands early in the second set - receiving a fine of over £3,000.
Worse was to follow for Williams, after she was penalised a second point for throwing her racket down in her anger (£2,322).
A game was then deducted from her after she verbally abused Ramos calling him a "liar" and a "thief" (£7,739).
Williams, who was aiming to equal Margaret Court's record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles, refused to shake hands with umpire Ramos after the match.
She also claimed it was "sexist" to have been penalised a game.
This may not be the end of the controversy though, as Williams, who received £1.43m for finishing runner-up, may yet decide to appeal the sanctions made against her.
