SERENA WILLIAMS has been fined more than £13,000 after receiving three code violations during Saturday's US Open final.

The 36-year-old, who collected £1.43 million for finishing runner-up, lost her cool on several occasions in New York as Naomi Osaka eventually won 6-2 6-4 in a bizarre finale to the competition.

Osaka, 20, kept her focus to become the first-ever Japanese to win a Grand Slam.

Williams launched a tirade of abuse at umpire Carlos Ramos, after previously getting a warning for coaching from the stands early in the second set - receiving a fine of over £3,000.

Williams, who was aiming to equal Margaret Court's record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles, refused to shake hands with umpire Ramos after the match.

She also claimed it was "sexist" to have been penalised a game.

This may not be the end of the controversy though, as Williams, who received £1.43m for finishing runner-up, may yet decide to appeal the sanctions made against her.
