Why was Serena Williams docked a game?

In the  second set the umpire awarded a game to Osaka for verbal abuse from Williams.

Before the incident the umpire gave a code violation to Serena for coaching and a few games earlier she smashed her racket in frustration earning a second.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion was in tears as she called for the referee stating: "This is not fair, because I am a woman you are going to take this away from me."

Fans across the stadium were booing and shouting at umpire Carlos Ramos with the atmosphere described as toxic.

Even after the game had finished, Williams told the umpire: "You owe me an apology."

Who won the final?

Osaka has won her first Grand Slam title beating a distraught Williams 6-2, 6-4.

The 20-year-old only won her first WTA title back in March and has shot up the rankings since then.

Looking calm and composed against a more and more and more riled up Williams, the Japanese younger kept her cool with two Championship points.

Williams never got back into the match after the docked game and Osaka took advantage to become the first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam singles title.
