The British boxer is on his fifth trainer in his boxing career, as he gears up for his welterweight bout with Samuel Vargas
AMIR KHAN is gearing up for his 37th fight of his career as he takes on Samuel Vargas.
It will be the Bolton boxer’s second bout under trainer Joe Goossen, following his split from Virgil Hunter.
Who is Amir Khan’s trainer, Joe Goossen?
Goossen was born on September 7, 1953 to Elliot and Anna Mae Goossen.
The 64-year-old South California-based trainer is well-known in the boxing circles, but is not the only famous face in the family.
His brother Dan was a boxing promoter who had the likes of Andre Ward and Mike Tyson under his wing, before dying four years ago.
Meanwhile, Greg Goossen played baseball for the New York Mets, while acting as a stand-in in films for Gene Hackman, before passing away in 2011.
Joe, who married his wife Julie in 1976, has trained a number of legends including Rafael and Gabriel Ruelas, and the late Diego Corrales, a former lightweight and super featherweight world champion.
When did Amir Khan and Joe Goossen start working together?
Goossen took over the duties of training Khan in March 2018, after Hunter suffered a health scare.
He was in the corner for the Bolton boxer’s first fight in two years, when he beat Phil Lo Greco in the opening round.
Goossen will once again be by Khan’s side when he takes on welterweight fighter Samuel Vargas at the Birmingham Arena on Saturday, September 8.
