Deontay Wilder and Billy Joe Saunders’ Nando’s brawl ‘could have left someone dead’ as cops reveal nobody will be charged over incident
An eyewitness has told SunSport that a member of Wilder's entourage hurled a chair from an upper level of the Belfast restaurant
DEONTAY WILDER'S Nando's bust-up with Billy Joe Saunders could have KILLED someone, a shocked eyewitness has exclusively told SunSport.
Police were called to Nando's in Belfast city centre on Friday night when the two boxers clashed, with Saunders throwing half a chicken at his US rival.
But it was the launching of a chair that one visitor to the venue believes could have led to a catastrophic outcome.
Both men were in Northern Ireland to watch Tyson Fury easily defeat Francesco Pianeta.
Saunders, the reigning WBO middleweight champ, is good friends with Fury.
And Wilder will be the Gypsy King's next opponent after it was sensationally announced the deal was done in the ring in Windsor Park.
But just 24 hours before Fury's night under the lights, headlines were made for chicken being thrown and not punches.
After greeting each other the Bronze Bomber, 32, has a go at Saunders for calling him a "racist c***".
Wilder says: "You called me a racist c***? Is that what you called me?"
Saunders replies: "Yeah, I did, yeah."
And the scene soon descended into chaos, that involves glasses being smashed and the chicken being launched, before Saunders runs out of the eatery.
Police were called, but both groups had left the premises by the time they arrived, and the force say "no complaints have been lodged".
But a diner who was eating with friends when the carnage ensued, says that things could have turned out very much worse.
Wishing to remain anonymous, the 31-year-old who lives in Belfast and works as a surgeon, said: "All hell broke loose, there were glasses being smashed, tables and chairs knocked over.
"Then one of Wilder's team threw a chair down from the balcony down to where Billy Joe was running.
"It fell between me, my friend and an eight-year-old girl. She was crying her eyes out, and had to be whisked away and hid under a table.
"I know for a fact that if that chair had have hit someone thrown from that height it would have killed them."
The eyewitness confirmed that WBC heavyweight world champ Wilder did not get involved in the action kicking off in the popular chicken restaurant.
But he slammed the actions of some of the boxer's friends who reacted to the situation.
He added: "The bloke who threw the chair then ran down to the lower level and pushed the little girl out out of the way as did another bloke in red, someone could definitely have been killed.
"Wilder was held back by his mates, they phoned for a driver straight away and fled. The police arrived 10 minutes later but they had already left.
"It was more along the lines of what Conor McGregor did with that bus incident."
Saunders had previously raged at Wilder after the heavyweight said: "Eddie Hearn is just another white man milking a black man."
Then Saunders told IFL TV in March: "He is a racist c*** I think.
"Questions about promoters using fighters, he's got a bit of a chip on his shoulder.
"When I read them, I thought 'you can't be saying that.' I've got mates from all different nationalities and you can't come out and say that, it's unprofessional."
A spokesperson for The Police Service of Northern Ireland told SunSport: "Police received a report of a disturbance at a restaurant in Belfast at 9.49pm on Friday, 17 August.
"Upon police arrival at 9.54pm all parties had left the premises and no complaints were forthcoming."
And a representative from Nando's said: "As always, the safety of our customers and employees was our number one priority.
"As soon as the incident took place our staff immediately called the Police and helped those that were affected.”
Wilder and Saunders were all smiles backstage before the Fury versus Pianeta fight, with the American admitting that "It's good to promote the fight".
And Saunders joked that "The chicken was very cold so I was flinging it about at people.
"It hit a certain American who wasn’t too happy about it."
