It was announced on Saturday night at Windsor Park in Belfast that Fury would challenge for Wilder's WBC world heavyweight title.

That is likely to take place in November or December in Las Vegas.

But despite most people involved in the sport licking their lips in anticipation, Whyte was less-than-impressed.

Posting a clip to his Instagram story, speaking on Wilder, Whyte said: “This is the heavyweight champion of boxing, biggest coward.

"[He] Don’t want to face his number one challenger. Let’s go bum squad!”

The WBC Silver Middleweight belt holder also gave his own commentary on Saturday night while watching the “powder puff men” Fury against Francesco Pianeta.

The Gypsy King won every single round of their ten-rounder in Northern Ireland - but Whyte said he could knock Fury out inside five rounds.

"Mark my words, I would knock Tyson Fury out in five rounds maximum, trust me.

"This is nonsense. What is this? Two powder puff men pounding each other to deal.

“Embarrassing bunch of cowards @bronzebomber @Gypsyking101 let’s go chumps #clowns."

Never one to shy away from the limelight, Fury responded to Whyte's rantings on Instagram.

The WBC challenger posted: "Cowards??? It could’ve been you!!! But som1 didn’t want to fight the final eliminator vs [Luis] Ortiz did u coward??? So that’s why your not fighting wilder.

"Also let’s face facts here, u struggled with @derekchisora_ & u should’ve lost that by 4 rounds, then @joeboxerparker nearly knocked u out in round twelve.

"U ran away from @whiterhino_21 all night! What have you ever achieved, ow I remember u got sparked by @anthony_joshua for the British title didn’t u!

"The facts are your just a dosser for @eddiehearn hoping u might get something from the leftovers of @anthony_joshua plate.

"& remember who your talking to the Gypsyking the man who has done everything that you could only dream of.

He then added: "#iknowyouras***housedosser. Enjoy being a work man for Eddie."
