MANCHESTER UNITED could make a shock move to bring Zlatan Ibrahimovic back to Old Trafford as part of a mass recruitment drive in January, according to reports.
Jose Mourinho has already been linked with fresh bids for Toby Alderweireld and Willian after missing out on them this summer.
The English transfer window closed on Thursday after United made just three signings.
According to the , the Reds could be looking to bring Ibrahimovic back to Manchester following his impressive spell for LA Galaxy.
He even dropped into see his old team-mates during their pre-season tour of the United States last month.
Ibrahimovic scored 29 goals in 53 games for United before he decided to continue his career in the MLS.
The source suggests that United will continue their pursuit for Alderweireld and Willian in the New Year.
Mourinho was linked to the defender this summer after he failed to cement his spot in Mauricio Pochettino's side.
But the Reds failed to file an official bid for the 29-year-old, who is said to be interested in a switch to United.
Chelsea star Willian revealed earlier this week that he wants to play for the Portuguese boss again.
The Blues made it clear that they did not want to cash in on the 30-year-old after Real Madrid and Barcelona showed interest.
United signed Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk for £53.1m, Diogo Dalot from Porto for £19.8m and Lee Grant from Stoke for 1.5m this summer.
And they offloaded Daley Blind, Sam Johnstone, Michael Carrick, Axel Tuanzebe, Joel Pereira and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson.
They begin their Premier League campaign at home to Leicester tonight, where they are likely to come up against another alleged failed transfer target in Harry Maguire.
