The three-time Open champion pushed his drive miles right on the second hole and his ball came to rest in trouble.
With the ball sitting a long way above his feet, Woods and caddie Joe LaCava urged the spectators to move back as he lined up his rescue shot.
But when he took a swipe his ball shot off to the right and viewers quickly ducked for cover.
Fortunately no one looked to be hurt as the ball scuttled down into more trouble.
Woods went on to hit his next shot to around 40ft and two-putted from there for a bogey.
Woods fired an opening round level par 71 after finding himself two under at one point.
He is playing in his first Open since 2015, when he missed the cut at St Andrews.
The American, 42, found himself in the middle of a social media storm last night.
He was blasted by a number of online users after a video emerged showing him ignoring a group of autograph-hunting children.
