Bowls fan to represent Jamaica at the Commonwealth Games inspired by ‘Cool Runnings’ bobsleigh team
Brit Andrew Newell, 44, is using his parents’ nationality to represent the island in the sport for the first time
A BRIT bowls fan is to play in the Commonwealth Games for Jamaica — inspired by its “Cool Runnings” bobsleigh team.
Andrew Newell, 44, is using his parents’ nationality to represent the island in the sport for the first time.
The long-time fan set up the Jamaican Lawn Bowls Association and organised UK tournaments to qualify for the games in Australia next month.
His ambition was spurred by the 1993 film based on the Caribbean country’s Winter Olympics bobsleigh team.
Andrew, from Battersea, South London, said: “My friends used to take the Mickey.
“But now I get respect for creating history.”
