Southampton sack boss Mauricio Pellegrino as side slip one place above Premier League’s relegation zone
Assistant Manager Carlos Compagnucci and Assistant First Team Coach Xavier Tamarit have also parted ways with the Saints
MAURICIO PELLEGRINO was sacked by Southampton after just ONE win in the Premier League since November.
And Saints chiefs moved swiftly to axe the 46-year-old to save their season.
Pell arrived in the summer on a three-year deal and Saints officials wanted to give him every chance of succeeding on the south coast.
But the 3-0 defeat to Newcastle at the weekend was a performance that persuaded them to move swiftly.
Saints chairman Ralph Krueger wanted to give the Argentina coach as much time to prove himself as possible after his summer appointment.
Even with NO wins in the Premier League over Christmas they stuck with him.
But the decision was made to act swiftly before a run-in that includes matches against Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal.
They are now looking to for a coach to come in and shake up their squad with just eight games left.

Marco Silva is available after getting axed at Watford and while was relegated with Hull last season, still made a positive impact at the KCOM Stadium.
“Southampton Football Club can confirm that it has parted company with First Team Manager Mauricio Pellegrino,” read the club’s statement.
“Assistant Manager Carlos Compagnucci and Assistant First Team Coach Xavier Tamarit have also parted company with the club.
“We would like to place on record our thanks to Mauricio, Carlos and Xavier for their efforts during their time with Southampton, and wish them well for the future.
“The club will look to appoint a new management team as soon as possible, with the search for a replacement already underway.”
Pell arrived at the club with a massive problem after Virgil van Dijk had requested a transfer.
The Dutch centre-back stayed at the club for the first half of the season before eventually moving to Liverpool for £75million in January.
Pellegrino spent £19million on Guido Carrillo to bolster his attack but the Argentina striker he knew from Estudiantes has failed to score a goal.
Saints are in the FA Cup quarter-final and face Wigan at the weekend but their position in the Prem, just a point above the relegation zone before Stoke’s game last night, saw him get the boot with just five wins during his spell on the south coast.
