Winter Olympics 2018: The spectacular crashes from Friday’s women’s freestyle aerial final

Belarus' Hanna Huskova clinched the gold with a fantastic run, but not everyone was so lucky

HURTLING through the air, twisting, turning, gliding gracefully with just a pair of skis strapped to your feet...

It can't be easy, can it?

Well, maybe it would be best to not get too inspired by this winter's astonishing crop of Olympians.

After all, if even the best freestyle aerial skiers in the world can hardly land their outrageous tricks, then what hope do we have?

During Friday's final, the hopefuls fidgeted in the starting gate, itching to hit the slopes and show off their finest moves in pursuit of gold.

...and then crashed. At least, a fair chunk of them.

If nothing else, they made for sensational pictures, but you have to feel for them, shattering into the snow after four years of practice leading up to the Pyeongchang Games.

On the day, Belarus' Hanna Huskova clinched the gold with a fantastic run, chalking up an overall score of 96.14.

China took home silver and bronze thanks to Xin Zhang (95.52) and Fanyu Kong (70.14).
