Ashes 2017: Five moments from day one at Adelaide as Craig Overton bags a wicket he’ll never forget and Cameron Bancroft runs into trouble

England put the Aussies into bat but were unable to take full advantage as the hosts made it to 209-4 at stumps

ENGLAND were left to rue what could've been after an inconsistent performance with the ball left Australia on top after day one in Adelaide.

After winning the toss, skipper Joe Root put the hosts in under cloudy skies - but a combination of rain and wayward bowling resulted in a slow start from the tourists.

Eventually the Aussies closed on 209-4 - here are five key moments from the day.

Bancroft runs into trouble

THE AUSSIES made a serene start despite the conditions and had seen off Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad.

So it was a huge surprise to see the first wicket of this Adelaide Test was a run-out, bringing back memories of Jonathan Trott in 2010/11.

David Warner tried to profit off a mis-field from Moeen Ali and could only watch as Chris Woakes threw down the stumps.

You were Warned

ENGLAND thought they'd made the key breakthrough when Woakes dismissed the dangerous Warner just before his half-century.

Despite being too short all morning, after the rain delay all the seamers rolled up their socks and started to cause some more problems, going past the openers bat on a number of occasions.

He just couldn't help himself at times and Woakes sent down another carrot - Warner took the bait, cutting off the back-foot and edging straight to Bairstow.

Missing the Mark

USMAN KHAWAJA played very well for his half-century - but should've been walking on 44.

A surprise bouncer from Woakes was hooked empahatically and picked out Mark Stoneman on the rope.

After waddling round to it in his fielding pads - much to the disbelief of Graeme Swann in the BT studio - 'Rocky' shelled an easy chance, to huge cheers from majority of the 54,000 inside the Adelaide Oval.

Debut scalp

CRAIG OVERTON will have been dreaming about his first Test wicket coming into this match.

He bowled superbly on day one, hitting the deck hard and throwing in some superb variation.

And it was Steve Smith - the most dangerous Aussie batsman - who became his first victim, bowled through the gate as one did him for pace.

Just look at that reaction.

They really are Barmy

A HUGE hand to the Barmy Army, who were absolutely superb throughout.

England needed their support today and will likely need it over what could be four very tightly fought days.

And our favourite was this lad - who brought his toothbrush along to a day/night game.

We can only assume he thought he'd be camping out.
