Carl Frampton and Barry McGuigan begin legal battle after ex-champion quit Cyclone Promotions and dropped trainer Shane
Former two-weight world champion appeared to split with legendary former fighter on good terms but lawyers have now been called in
CARL FRAMPTON and Barry McGuigan are set to sue each other after their ugly boxing bust-up reached the High Court.
Lawyers for the 30-year-old former two-weight world champ released a statement on Saturday revealing McGuigan’s Cyclone Promotions firm had made the first move and insisted they will counter-punch the claim.
John Finucane – of Finucane Toner solicitors – wrote: “We can confirm that Cyclone Promotions and Blain McGuigan have lodged proceedings against our client Mr Carl Frampton in the High Court London on November 23 2017.
“Mr Frampton is deeply disappointed that Cyclone Promotions have decided to initiate legal proceedings against him, however he will not only defend this action rigorously but can confirm he will be counter claiming on a number of grounds.
“Mr Frampton is confident that this process will vindicate his position and reputation and looks forward to engaging fully in this process to present all aspects of this claim before the court.
“Therefore it would be inappropriate to issue any further comment at this stage.”
Frampton was guided to glory by the retired champion with son Shane also Frampton’s trainer.
But dropping his title to Leo Santa Cruz in their rematch and missing weight before a cancelled bout with Andres Gutierrez led to a bitter break-up.

Frampton wants major fights – with particular emphasis on fighting at the giant Windsor Park – and has now joined up with Frank Warren.
Initially the shock separation seemed amicable but it has turned sour now with the McGuigans calling in lawyers.
Frampton said: “I had a great relationship with all the McGuigans.
“Barry has been a great friend and mentor to me, Shane McGuigan as well – I was at their weddings, they were at my wedding.
“But I just felt it was time for me to develop my career. I had great times with them and I did a lot of good things with them, we had some amazing nights that I’ll never forget.
“But I took a decision that for me to develop my career and get the big fights that I want, I had to move on.
“I want to do my own thing and that’s it, to take my career to the next level I want to move on.”
