WWE latest news: Wrestling chief Vince McMahon wanted Chris Jericho and not AJ Styles to replace Bray Wyatt at Tables, Ladders and Chairs

Former world champ Y2J was contacted to make a stunning comeback in place of the viral meningitis struck ace at last week's pay-per-view

WWE were reportedly forced to turn to AJ Styles after Chris Jericho rejected the chance to fill in for Bray Wyatt at the recent Tables, Ladders and Chairs pay-per-view.

The planet's largest wrestling promotion has been decimated by illness over the last fortnight as a number of stars were forced out of action through viral meningitis.

Roman Reigns' setback was undoubtedly the biggest blow to the company, with the Big Dog forced to pull out of The Shield reunion and the main event of last week's PPV extravaganza.

That led to Monday Night Raw general manager and legend Kurt Angle, 48, making a stunning return to the ring after an 11-year absence from action with WWE.

But the company suffered another huge blow when former world champ Bray Wyatt was struck down with the condition too.

He was due to face Finn Balor at TLC - but had to be replaced by SmackDown Live's Styles.

However, the Phenomenal One was not the first choice of WWE owner Vince McMahon to be Wyatt's replacement.

The claim that the Ayatollah of Rocknrolla Chris Jericho was the man first contacted to fill the void.

They report that WWE did contact Y2J about making a comeback against Balor.

But Jericho turned down the opportunity as he is currently on tour with his rock band Fozzy and opted to remain with them.

It has also been revealed that WWE Universal Champion Brock Lesnar was not contacted to replace either Reigns or Wyatt.

Reports also claim that officials have been testing the Raw roster for mumps.

The illness that swept through the locker room and wiped out a number of stars was thought to be viral meningitis, but it is now believed to be mumps.
