Cologne demand 5-0 loss to Borussia Dortmund to be replayed after VAR system controversy
COLOGNE are calling for a rematch after a goal was wrongfully awarded during their 5-0 defeat against Borussia Dortmund.
The Colony have ignited a protest after believing that the Video Assistant Referee was used improperly.
The moment of controversy came when BVB defender Sokratis Papstathopoulos scored following a corner kick in the dying stages of the first half.
However, referee Patrick Ittrich had already blown his whistle before the ball crossed the line after witnessing a foul on Cologne goalkeeper Timo Horn.
The official's decision was revoked after the Video Assitant Referee (VAR) decided to still award the goal - giving the home side a 2-0 advantage at half-time.
Peter Stoger's side have now suffered the German top-flight's worst start since the 1962-63 season.
They have lost all four of their league fixtures this term and have a goal difference of minus 11.
The Colony's sporting director Jorg Schmadtke told Sky after the match: "Of course, we want to protest it [the result].
"It was an irregular decision against the set of regulations, which is why we are seeking for the match to be replayed.
"I'm a proponent of the video review system, but I'm pleading that things are kept according to protocol. People can't just do as they please."
Following the first-half controversy, Maximilian Philipp doubled his tally after the scoring the opener and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang bagged a brace to secure the three points.
The VAR system intervened for the second time just before the hour mark, rightfully awarding the German giants a penalty.
Peter Bosz's side maintained their unbeaten record and are now top of the Bundesliga standings on goal difference.
Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim told Sky in response: "To protest after losing 5-0 is the strong attitude of a bad loser."
Bundesliga announced back in January that the video review technology will be trailed during the 2017-18 season.
